TESTING PROCESS
Testing to become a Wyoming State Trooper begins with filling out the appropriate application. Following the online application, you must complete the written test through Public Safety Testing. The written test may be taken virtually once you have registered. Prior to being invited to in-person testing, you must complete both of those steps.
In-person testing takes place in Cheyenne, WY over the course of two or three days. These testing days involve physical fitness testing, oral board interviews, eye-detect testing, and psychological testing. Upon successful completion of these four testing phases, you will move on to the background investigation portion of the hiring process. Pending a successful background investigation, you will receive a final conditional offer of employment which includes your projected duty station assignment and instructions regarding acceptance into, and preparation for, the Trooper Basic Academy.
We are excited to offer an abbreviated 6-week onboarding training phase for individuals who meet the qualifications for Trooper II (Wyoming POST Advanced Peace Officer Certification or equivalent).
The Wyoming Highway Patrol offers a 20-week Trooper Basic Academy for new hires who do not have qualifying previous law enforcement experience. New hires who meet the qualifications regarding previous sworn law enforcement experience (Trooper II) may opt to attend the full 20-week Trooper Basic Academy or the 6-week in-house onboarding training phase prior to beginning Field Training. New Troopers are required to successfully complete their designated course of training at the Training Academy in Cheyenne, WY as a condition of their employment.
