MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Wyoming residency is not required to apply or to take initial examinations. Wyoming residency is required upon completion of the Trooper Basic Academy.
Applicants must be 21 years of age on or before the hire date.
Applicants must have successfully completed high school or equivalent (GED).
Applicants must have two (2) years of work experience working with the public. This experience does not need to be law enforcement experience.
Applicants must be a citizen of the United States of America. Wyoming Highway Patrol will not sponsor citizenship.
Applicants must successfully complete all required entry-level examinations in order to be invited to attend the Trooper Basic Academy.
Applicants must not have been convicted of, nor have a record of:
A conviction for any criminal offense, which, in the opinion of the Administrator, would tend to harm the integrity of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Any revocation, suspension, denial, or disqualification of their driver’s license or driving privilege within the three years before the date of the qualifying examination. Applicants cannot participate in the testing process until three (3) years have passed from the ending date of any such revocation, suspension, denial, or disqualification.
A record of several preventable motor vehicle collisions or convictions for moving traffic violations which would indicate the applicant may be detrimental to highway safety.
Vision: Visual acuity must be 20/20 in each eye or correctable to 20/20 or better as indicated below:
Uncorrected visual acuity greater than 20/100 must be corrected to 20/20 or better through the use of soft contact lenses (no glasses or hard contact lenses).
Uncorrected visual acuity between 20/20 and 20/100 may be corrected to 20/20 or better through the use of hard or soft contact lenses or glasses.
A candidate must be a successful contact wearer for at least six months before an appointment to recruit school.
Candidates who have undergone surgical procedures to improve visual acuity must do so at least six months before appointment to recruit school.
TESTING PROCESS
Step 1.
Apply for the Trooper I or Trooper II (Pre-certified with two or more years of experience) position.
Step 2.
Complete the following prerequisites before attending the in-person testing. (You will receive email notifications with the necessary links and guidance.)
Pass the Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) test administered by Public Safety Testing within one year prior to the in-person testing date ➡️ Public Safety Testing.
Complete the Guardian Alliance background investigation.
Complete the Online Background Information System (OBIS).
Step 3.
Attend the in-person testing held in Cheyenne, WY, from August 11th to 13th, 2025. This testing will be conducted by appointment and will consist of the following sequential phases. You must successfully complete each phase to proceed to the next.

Oral board interview.
Eye-detect testing (deception test).
Psychological testing.
Step 4.
Upon successful completion of the four testing phases, you will advance to the background investigation portion of the hiring process. Pending a successful background investigation, you will receive a conditional offer of employment, including your projected duty station assignment (you will have the opportunity to indicate your top three preferred duty stations), and instructions regarding acceptance into and preparation for the Trooper Basic Academy.
We are pleased to offer an abbreviated 6-week onboarding training phase for candidates who meet the qualifications for Trooper II (Wyoming POST Advanced Peace Officer Certification or equivalent and a minimum of two years of certified law enforcement experience).
The Trooper Basic Academy and Onboarding will take place in Cheyenne, WY. During training days, troopers are required to reside in the provided housing, which includes 7-day-a-week accommodation and three meals per day.
