The Wyoming Highway Patrol's Trooper Basic Academy is fully accredited and certified through the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (WY P.O.S.T.) and exceeds the minimum requirements for Wyoming Basic Peace Officer Certification. Our in-house, residential academy is hosted at the Laramie County Community College (L.C.C.C.) campus in Cheyenne, WY. Upon being hired as a Wyoming State Trooper, you are required to successfully complete your designated academy training.
Two training options are offered:
A 20-week full Basic Trooper Academy for recruits without qualifying prior law enforcement experience
A 6-week accelerated onboarding academy for recruits with qualifying prior law enforcement experience
All recruits are provided room and board on campus during their respective academy training. Recruits are required to reside at the academy during the week and are free to go home or travel on weekends. Recruits receive full salary and benefits during their time at the training academy.
Upon completion of the full 20-week Basic Trooper Academy, a Trooper recruit will have received nearly 1,000 hours of realistic and relevant training. Successful completion of the 20-week Academy also allows new Troopers to be eligible to receive 33 college credits through Laramie County Community College.
